iPad vs Fire Tablet for Open House Sign-In

One of these costs three hundred dollars more to do the same one job.

Verdict

For sign-in alone, the Fire HD 10 is the sensible buy. Collecting a name, an email and a phone number does not need an iPad, and leaving a four hundred dollar device unattended on a table in a house full of strangers is a worse feeling than leaving a hundred and twenty dollar one. The iPad wins if the tablet doubles as a presentation and document signing device, or if the sign-in app you want is not available on Amazon's app store, which is a real and common limitation.

Choose the Apple iPad 11-inch if…

The tablet is going to do more than sit on a hall table. If you present CMAs on it, sign documents with clients, take photos, or run software that only exists on iOS, then it is a working device rather than a clipboard and the price is reasonable. Guided Access locks it to one app properly, which is what you want during an open house.

Choose the Amazon Fire HD 10 if…

It is a sign-in sheet with a battery. The Fire HD 10 does that job perfectly well at a fraction of the price, and the low price is itself a feature when the device spends three hours out of your sight. Check first that your sign-in app is available on the Amazon Appstore, because many are not, and a browser based form is the usual workaround.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a tablet better than a paper sign-in sheet?

It captures cleaner data and can sync to your CRM immediately, which is the real advantage. It also intimidates a few visitors into skipping it. Many agents keep paper as a fallback for anyone who hesitates, since a legible name on paper beats a skipped entry on a screen.

What about privacy?

You are collecting personal contact details, so tell visitors what you will use them for and follow the marketing consent rules that apply where you work. Rules on unsolicited calls and texts are stricter than most people assume and vary by state. Check with your broker before you set up any automated follow up.

Do I need cellular data on it?

Rarely. Most sign-in apps queue entries offline and sync later, and you can share from your phone if needed. Cellular models cost more and add a monthly line for very little benefit.
